Umaid Bhawan Palace history –

The foundation of Umaid Bhawan Palace was laid by Maharaja Umaid Singh in 1929 and later it was opened for official residence. It was believed that the palace was mainly constructed to employ thousands of people during a grand famine. The reign was cursed by a saint that famine will fall in the entire reign. With the passage of time, this curse got true and the palace was in a position of serious drought for more than three years.

The 37th king of Rathore dynasty, Umaid Singh decided to construct a lavish palace for providing employment. This opportunity was opted by the farmers having a steady income when their fields become useless. Once the palace got started, the authorities found that the place of the palace was barren with utmost water scarcity. The king commanded to construct a railway line for transporting the construction material easily.  Burmese teak wood and Makrana marbles were used for interior work of the palace.
After completion of the palace, the complex was not open for functioning due to incessant death and misfortunes in the royal family. In 1943, the palace was opened by Umaid Singh and then he lived only for four years. Later his great-grandson decided to dedicate a part of this grand private residence for the hotel.
